Overview

The Kerala Engineering, Architecture and Medical Entrance Examination (KEAM) is a state-level entrance exam conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (CEE), Kerala. It serves as an important admission gateway for various undergraduate courses offered by colleges and universities across Kerala.

Through KEAM, candidates can seek admission to programmes in fields such as:

  • Engineering
  • Architecture
  • Pharmacy
  • Medical and allied courses

It is important to note that KEAM scores are used for admission to Engineering and Pharmacy courses, while admission to other programmes is based on separate national-level entrance exams:

  • NEET for Medical and allied courses
  • NATA for Architecture

Thus, KEAM plays a major role in helping students secure admission to professional undergraduate courses in Kerala.

Selection Process

The Kerala Engineering, Architecture and Medical Entrance Examination (KEAM) counseling is a centralised process managed by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), Kerala. It determines admissions to engineering, architecture, pharmacy and medical courses in the state.

Centralised Allotment

The counseling is conducted through a Single Window System (SWS), where candidates submit their preferred college and course choices online. Based on their KEAM rank, available seats and submitted preferences, candidates are allotted seats.

Counselling Steps

  1. Registration and Fee Payment Candidates must register on the designated portal and pay the required tuition fee online.
  2. Option Entry Registered candidates submit their preferred colleges and courses in order of preference.
  3. Seat Allotment The CEE allocates seats based on merit, availability and candidate preferences. Allotment letters are issued to successful candidates.
  4. Reporting to College Candidates must report to the allotted college within the specified timeframe, carrying necessary documents for verification.
  5. Fee Payment and Admission After document verification, candidates pay the remaining tuition fees to confirm their admission.

This centralised system ensures a fair and transparent admission process for all eligible candidates.

Syllabus & Exam Pattern

Traditionally, the Kerala Engineering, Architecture and Medical Entrance Examination (KEAM) was conducted in a pen-and-paper format. However, a significant change is anticipated for the upcoming exam. There are strong indications that the 2024 and subsequent KEAM exams will be administered as computer-based tests (CBT). This shift aligns with the increasing trend of computerising entrance examinations across India.

The KEAM question paper will consist of Multiple choice questions. For each correct answer, four marks will be given to candidates. For each incorrect answer, a mark will be deducted in the exam.

Cut Off

The KEAM cut off marks are released after the declaration of the exam results by the exam conducting authority. The cut off plays an important role in the admission process, as admission to engineering colleges in Kerala is based on the candidate’s rank in the merit list.

The merit list is prepared by considering the required admission criteria, and the cut off marks help determine the rank range for admission into various colleges and courses.

Factors Affecting KEAM Cut Off

The KEAM cut off may vary every year depending on several factors, such as:

  • Total number of applicants
  • Difficulty level of the exam
  • Number of seats available
  • Category of the candidate (such as General, SEBC, SC, ST, etc.)
  • Previous year admission trends

Candidates with a rank above the required cut off have better chances of getting admission to their preferred college and course.

Answer Key

The KEAM answer key is generally released online by the exam conducting authority, usually in July. It helps candidates estimate their probable scores before the official result is announced.

The answer key is made available in PDF format and contains the correct answers to all the questions asked in the examination.

If candidates find any discrepancy or believe that an answer is incorrect, they can raise objections / challenge the answer key by submitting a request within the prescribed time and paying the required fee.

Checking the answer key is useful for:

  • Estimating your score
  • Evaluating exam performance
  • Identifying possible errors in official responses
