  • Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka on March 6, 2026 announced their intention to ban the use of social media for children.
  • Andhra Pradesh plans to prohibit social media for children below 13 years of age, the Government in neighbouring Karnataka intends to extend the ban to children under 16.
  • It is noteworthy that the Central government's Economic Survey tabled in Parliament in January this year said age-based access to online platforms should be considered while also cutting down online teaching to avoid digital addiction.
International Affairs
  • The US Treasury Department on March 6, 2026 allowed India to buy Russian oil for 30 days.
  • As per the decision, India can keep buying crude oil and petroleum products from Russia for a month, until April 4.
  • That measure is aimed at helping ease upward pressure on oil prices that affect gasoline costs for US consumers. But it also underlines how the US-Israeli conflict with Iran is tightening the markets for oil and gas — including Russia’s crude.

  • Rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah's newly formed Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) was on March 6, 2026  won a sweeping victory in Nepal's first general elections since the violent Gen Z protests.
  • The election was called after youth protests in September 2025 that led to the resignation of Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli.
State Affairs
  • Uttarakhand State cabinet on March 6, 2026 approved the Uttarakhand Public Gambling Prevention Bill, 2026, replacing the pre-Independence Public Gambling Act, 1867, in compliance with directions issued by the Union ministry of home affairs.
  • The proposed law aims to prevent and penalise public gambling, the running of common gambling houses, and betting on games in the state. It also contains provisions related to matters incidental to such offences.
  • The cabinet also approved the Uttarakhand Minority Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to strengthen the functioning of the Minority Commission constituted in 2002 to safeguard the constitutional rights and interests of minority communities in the state.
